A lifetime of waiting

I don’t know where to begin…

I first picked up the Eye of the World in high school. It was the Fall of 1998 and I had just finished The Lord of the Rings. I was devastated. I thought that I had read the pinnacle of fantasy literature and that nothing I would ever pick up would fill that void in my heart that longed for more journeys to Middle Earth. To be honest, I was depressed.

With trepidation I opened the book and began with the prologue… And was transported. I was filled with questions and I had to know more. Chapter by chapter I read long into the night, unable to put down the book.

It took me 3 days to finish The Eye of the World. I spent the next few days telling all of my friends about it. I was hooked and I had to see where this goes. I picked up book 2 and was blown away. The plot, the pacing, the finale…

The end of book The Great Hunt had me in tears. Not from sadness, but from astonished relief. I had found my next Lord of the Rings. I had found my escape from reality. I had found The Wheel of Time and I was fully invested in the adventures of these characters that leapt off of the page so easily and into my life. Not even Tolkien had managed this level of excitement for me.

Book two turned into 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. I read them and re-read then in turn awaiting each new entry. Book 9. Book 10. And finally book 11.

I was in college when I learned of Robert Jordan’s health issues. I prayed earnestly that he would recover and be able to complete his masterpiece… And of course that was not to be. I, like so many others, wept at his passing. A man that I had never met had changed my life and now he was gone. I felt as if a hole had been ripped through my soul. A piece of me was gone and I didn’t know how to replace it.

As the years went by and we heard that Brandon Sanderson had been tapped to finish the series, my optimism grew. I was excited to get to read what Robert Jordan had planned for our heroes. I couldn’t wait to finish what I had began so many years prior. As the final 3 books came out and I read the ending of the series, I cried again. Mr. Jordan’s masterpiece was complete. My journey through the turning of the wheel was over. Or so I thought

Fast forward to the show getting announced. I clicked on every article and started following every YouTube page I could find. I eagerly ate up every rumor, every cast announcement, every detail about the show that I could find. Even though I never interacted with the YouTube channels they became a part of my friends circle in a way. I looked forward to The Dusty Wheel, or WoT Up, Naeblis, Unraveling the Pattern, and Lezbi Nerdy along with others.

It was like reading the books all over again. The wait. The excitement. The anticipation.

When the show aired I loved it! Was it perfect? No. But it was The Wheel of Time and I loved it in spite of it’s flaws. The cast was WONDERFUL. Everyone was done so so well. I loved everything about them.

Season 2 took me to even more exciting places. It was very well done, the pacing, plot, and cinematic quality were greatly improved and the acting was even better. BRAVO!

Then we got season 3. HOLY CRAP! This is the best season of fantasy or science fiction television I’ve ever seen. Game of Thrones be damned. EVERYTHING about season 3 was INCREDIBLE. Aside from being too short… It was a marvel. Rafe and crew… You nailed it!!!! The cast?! Perfection.

I assumed that we would get our 8 seasons after that. Why would we not?! You don’t follow a masterpiece of television with a cancellation… Right?

Amazon. Sony. I know it’s all about money. But… It’s really not.

You see, there are millions of us out here that love these characters and this series like family. We cherish them. We are fully invested in this show. We love the cast. We love the sets. We love the costuming. We love the music. WE WANT MORE!

We’ve been waiting, many of us, our whole lives for this. Please don’t let this die. Not now. Not when you’ve hit your creative stride. This show deserves better. The fans deserve better. The cast and crew deserve to see this through.

I have loved this series since I was 15 years old. I will love it till the day I die. I’m so grateful to all of the people in the fandom, the YouTubers, the cast, the crew, and most of all Robert Jordan and Harriet… Without whom none of this is possible.

Thank you and may we all be able to see this turning of the wheel to it’s completion.
