Glory to the Builders

This is my love letter to every single person involved with bringing The Wheel of Time to life.

A wind rose between the tents at Camp Meridale. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

I was a queer autistic teenager. My peers couldn’t understand why I preferred reading to ogling boys at football games. Sometimes I felt like an alien. But adults got me. The pottery counselor heard me talking about reading and she told me that I should read The Wheel of Time.

Decades later I still find it hard to articulate why these books made such an impression on me. The Wheel of Time is etched into my bones. The stories have been with me through hard times. The characters were my friends when genuine connection in real life was scarce.

I’ve always believed the books were not adaptable to film or television. Never have I been so pleased to be wrong.

The team behind the Wheel of Time has shown a deep respect and love for the source material. The writers deftly shifted meandering plots for a fast paced medium and brought subtext carefully planted by Robert Jordan to the forefront. You preserved the heart of the story and showed the world what it looks like to connect and love and protect. To build family outside your blood kin. And to take on insurmountable odds and fight for the Light.

Characters, my lifelong friends, were breathed to life by talented actors and stunt doubles from across the globe.

Costumes, makeup, props, locations, and sets brought the cultures to life. The details in every design held meaning and added incredible texture the storytelling. Weathering made the world feel lived in.

VFX wove threads of saidin and saidar into intricate displays of the One Power.

The tapestry of dialect added a richness and diversity to the world; often inviting actors to bring their own culture and heritage into their roles. The Old Tongue jumped off the page and into our hearts.

Directors, cinematographers, and stunt choreographers alchemized scripts into cinematic storytelling.

Musicians, sound designers, and editors compelled our emotions as we flowed from one scene into the next.

And countless crew members literally and metaphorically held space for the actors to embody these characters.

I’ll be forever grateful to every human involved in this production.

You changed my life.

When The Wheel of Time show reforged the fandom I found myself, my whole self, embraced and supported within the Wheel of Time community. I can’t express how deeply affecting it is for an outsider to suddenly belong. The fandom has created beautiful spaces for connection and support that will be an ongoing legacy of this production.

We don’t accept endings. We fight for a flicker, a transmigration, a mirror world in which the production continues on another platform.
