My Favorite Characters Are Alive
When my dad turned on the TV and said, “There’s a new show on and I think you might like it,” I wasn’t expecting much. Usually I only watch TV tangentially while doing something else, like scrolling on my phone or (at the time) finishing my college homework. But from the first moment, I was hooked. The characters on display were so unique and well-played, the magic system so beautifully designed and interesting, and I had to know more. A quick Google search proved that this was a book series, and being an avid reader, I had to know. For Christmas, my dad bought me the first two box sets, and I consumed the first three voraciously and soon had the rest of the series on the way. After reading the first three books, I watched the show again, and was ecstatic to see that the books had transferred almost perfectly to the screen. While reading the books, I didn’t picture random people in my head: I pictured Josha as Rand, Rosamund as Moiraine, Madeleine as Egwene, Zoe as Nynaeve, Marcus as Perrin, Daniel as Lan, Barney (and later Donal) as Mat, and they all fit into the page as if Robert Jordan had always meant them to be there. I finished all fifteen books in six months, and bawled my way through the ending. Throughout, I kept stopping and thinking “Oh my God, I can’t wait to watch Josha do this scene” or “Zoe is going to be SO GOOD when she does this”. The books and the show were absolutely married in my mind, and I watched it again after reading and was overjoyed to again see all my favorite characters on screen. Season 2, particularly Maddie’s performance in Eyes Without Pity, showed me that I was watching something incredible, and Season 3 solidified it as a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece.
The last few weeks of my life have been awful, and I’m sure I have some gray hairs to show for it. But I’ve been rereading the books for the second time, and that has helped, along with rewatching my favorite season three scenes (Rand walking through the crystal pillars and every subsequent past recalled is some of the absolute best acting I have seen in my entire life). So when I looked down at my phone during a slow time at work and saw that the show was cancelled, after day 20 in a 20-day-long marathon of bad days, I was shattered. How could something so beautiful, so good, so obviously loved by the writers and the actors and the creatives, be taken away from us? It’s not fair. It’s not fair that these actors are being torn out of roles that they were born to play. So this is why I’m writing this letter. To show everyone that we love them so much and that they have done A GOOD JOB. This is not your fault. This is the fault of greed, and the inability to see something beautiful. You have done so well, and we’re going to fight like hell to bring back that beauty. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done.
