Wheel of Time has been my favorite book series for the past twenty years. I was in elementary school when the Lord of the Rings movies were released, and I thought that Tolkien was the first and last word in fantasy. When my friend gifted me a copy of The Eye of the World for my tenth birthday, however, I was introduced to Robert Jordan’s fictional world and blown away by the depth and realism.

A key part of being a Wheel of Time fan has historically been waiting—especially after Robert Jordan’s illness was announced and it was unclear whether his books would ever be completed. The Wheel of Time show is the adaptation that so many of us have been awaiting for our entire lives. More than anything, what the creators of the show understand is the core premise of the book series—the near infinite possibilities within one life, and the compounded possibilities of their interwoven stories.

The show is absolutely thrilling when it depicts an iconic scene from the books in more-or-less exactly the way Jordan describes it. Season three is filled with those moments, and that’s part of the reason it’s the best-loved season so far. Equally thrilling can be moments where a scene unfolds in a way that subverts our expectations, but is nonetheless true to the characters and the themes that Robert Jordan wrote. The casting for the show is pitch-perfect, and especially as the show has progressed, it’s so satisfying to see the actors really inhabit their characters. I have often told friends that one of the best parts of season three is just watching casual interactions between these characters, like seeing Min and Nynaeve bonding, or watching the Two Rivers crew reunited in Tar Valon before they head their separate ways.

In the third season, we have seen Wheel of Time advance from being good fantasy television, to being just good television period. I know with the proper support and resources, the team behind the show could create a masterpiece that would deliver the full potential of the books. I hope that another studio will give them the chance to finish the story, both for the sake of longtime book fans like myself, and the millions of new fans the show has brought in.
