This Old Nerd is Heartbroken

I have been a fan of the Wheel of Time Series since the 90s when my best friend gave me the first book and said “you NEED to read this.” Since then I have read and re-read the series multiple times – I started just as book 6 came out – so of course I had to re-read everything each time a new one was published, as well as sporadic readings in the intervening years. (Do the math on that – it is A LOT of pages!)

During that time, I spent so many hours discussing and analyzing the book’s prophesies and anticipating what was going to happen to my beloved characters in each next installment. And then, years later, my all time favorite fantasy series was picked up to be made into a TV show!

I know there have been naysayers along the way, but to say I adored the show from the beginning is to seriously understate things. Is it exactly like the books? Of course not! How do you adapt something so ginormous into a limited TV format? But what has been there since the very beginning is the true love put into it, especially the characterizations that are so spot on and speak to the core of each character regardless of any narrative changes (and in many cases, improving upon the source material – looking at you Lanfear!) These actors are who I see and hear in my head now, every time I re-read. And what has been most exciting with these changes made, is the opportunity for me to be surprised about how the story may unfold in this turning of the wheel, and have the same fun theory discussions with the same friends from the last 30 years.

Hearing this show was cancelled has broken my heart. The acting, writing and costuming have all been beyond compare. Multiple episodes have made me both laugh and cry. And after season three brought The Shadow Rising (one of my top 2 faves in the series) to life in the most unbelievable way, (Rhuidean was some of the very best TV ever made!) I was so excited to see how the next season would play out. There are some of the most iconic moments in the series yet to come and I could not wait to see it portrayed and now I never will. Additionally, I have friends who are super into the show that never even knew about the Wheel of Time that are so psyched about it and will never get to see what happens.

I really hope that somehow this show can be brought back to life again. This is seriously the best fantasy show that has come around in years (wonderfully dimensional characters, not overly gratuitous for shock value, a huge world full of factions and political intrigue yet to be explored) and it is such a shame that it is not being given the chance it clearly deserves. I really really hope if enough of us make noise, someone somewhere will pick it up and keep it going until the end.

Regardless of the outcome, I want to thank the cast and crew from the very bottom of my nerdy heart for taking something I love so much, and through their own love, making something I will treasure endlessly.
